AWI Drives the U.S. Bank Championship of Milwaukee with Symbol’s Low Cost but Powerful WS-2000 Switch

The U.S. Bank Championship of Milwaukee represents Wisconsin’s premier golf tournament and is held annually in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  When the need for wireless LAN access became apparent, U.S. Bank Championship officials turned to Advanced Wireless, Inc. (AWI) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin to define the requirements and provide the solution.

The Need:
“Defining the requirement set was critical”, stated Darryl Morin, President and CEO of AWI.  “We had four separate user groups.  This included the tournament players, local and national media, corporate sponsors, and tournament officials and staff.  There was multiple access areas defined throughout the golf course for the users.  Applications and throughput requirements differed greatly between the users groups.  Since this was the first time the tournament was using wireless LAN (WLAN) technology, we had to make estimates on the number of users and the required capacity to insure a user satisfying experience.  Lastly, we needed to make sure our solution provided the required level of security by group.

The Solution:
After evaluating numerous hardware options, AWI selected Symbol Technologies WS-2000 wireless switch.  “While small and inexpensive, the WS-2000 packs the power and functionality not found in other products”, stated Morin.  The WS-2000 allowed AWI to define four subnets as well as the WAN port, implement it’s stateful packet inspection firewall, use it’s power over Ethernet (PoE) switch ports, assign unique IP address ranges per subnet in it’s DHCP server, and centrally configure and manage the four (4) WLAN’s.  The WS-2000 can manage up to six (6) 802.11a/b/g access ports which were more than enough to provide the coverage and performance required at each location.  In addition, the WS-2000 gave AWI the ability to provide all standard layered security models starting with WEP, to WPA, to the IEEE’s 802.11i standard for the wireless network and VPN and SSH support for wired network security.

The Results:
“The WLAN was operational 100% of the time and provided end users with data rates ranging from 11 to 54Mbps.  To have implemented any other solution would have doubled the hardware cost, and increased support costs by 200-300%.  By being able to centrally configure, monitor and manage each location through one piece of equipment, we not only reduced our support costs, but more importantly, we were able to exceed our partner’s expectations,” said Morin.
